Forming the central axis of Manx history, Castle Rushen gives Castletown its name (Manx - Ballacashtel). It is a mediaeval building of outstanding interest and there is no better preserved monument of this type in Britain nor even in Europe. It stands on a picturesque bay on the south of the island and was once the main place of government for the Island and also a prison.
